Explore how technology in Kenya’s auto industry is transforming transportation through electric vehicles, AI integration, and connected car innovations.

The Role of Technology in Kenya’s Auto Industry

In 2025, technology in Kenya’s auto industry is driving significant transformations, from the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and connected car technologies. These advancements are reshaping the automotive landscape, promoting sustainability, and enhancing the driving experience for Kenyans.

Electric Vehicles and Charging Infrastructure

The adoption of electric vehicles is accelerating, with companies like BasiGo and Roam Electric expanding their operations. BasiGo, for instance, is leasing and selling electric buses to Kenyan public transport operators, while Roam Electric focuses on producing electric motorcycles in Nairobi. To support this growth, Kenya Power has announced a $1.9 million investment plan to accelerate EV adoption, including the development of charging infrastructure.

AI Integration and Predictive Technologies

Technology in Kenya’s auto industry is also embracing AI to enhance vehicle performance and safety. Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are becoming more common, offering features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. Moreover, predictive maintenance technologies are being implemented to anticipate vehicle issues before they occur, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.

Connected Cars and Smart Features

The rise of connected cars is another testament to the impact of technology in Kenya’s auto industry. Modern vehicles are now equipped with infotainment systems that seamlessly integrate with smartphones, providing real-time navigation, entertainment, and vehicle diagnostics. Over-the-air software updates ensure that vehicles remain up-to-date with the latest features and improvements.

Government Initiatives and Policy Support

The Kenyan government is actively supporting the technological evolution of the automotive sector. Policies aimed at reducing excise tax on EVs and promoting local manufacturing are in place to encourage the adoption of sustainable transportation solutions. Additionally, the government plans to build 1,000 EV charging stations by 2027 to meet the growing demand.
